I know people that are always spending a lot of money on the newest software and hardware – claiming they can’t do the best work without the newest “toys”. As a result, their pockets continue to empty and they never improve their skills at motion graphics, compositing, photoshop, and so on. What a shame!

Alex Lyndsay worked on Star Wars: Episode I with a G3 PowerPC Mac running After Effect 3.1 with 192 MB of RAM and a 4 GB Hard Drive. Take a look at the finished Pod Racing Scene. So don’t think you have to have the fastest machine in the world to do some serious work. Oh, and chew on this – my iPhone 4 has more power than Alex’s Ol’ G3 Mac – so it’s not about computer speed. Another example is 405: The Movie. This was created by a few guys that had borrowed a Canon DV camera, using Windows Machine and off-the-shelf software. It’s not the machine or hardware that makes you talented.

Hey, don’t get me wrong! I love to have the latest, greatest, and fastest equipment! But, if you keep coming up with reasons why you can’t do something without what you have – I think you are lying to yourself. Hear me out, for I experienced the frustration firsthand. I began my career knowing that experience (which means mistakes and learning) was going to make me better, not necessarily a fancy computer. So, I asked production companies if I could wrangle their cable for free – or just bring them coffee. At night I worked at a clothing store in the mall to pay the bills (bleh!). Eventually the production companies let me touch their cameras, and after I figured out all ins and outs of those as I moved on to learning about something else. After about a year of working my butt off (for FREE!) I had several good job offers heading my way. So, I ended up years ahead of my peers with a job, experience, and without loads of credit card debt.

When I was about 27 I remember interviewing guys my age who had just gotten out of graduate school with a video production degree. They knew their books and the theory behind it all, but had no experience using video to make money…. which is ultimately what you need to be able to do if you want someone to give you a job (or feed your family if you are doing it on your own). These poor guys had done what they thought was best – spend money for education – unfortunately it ended them up in a tough spot.

If you do find yourself wanting a career that demands a college degree here is a book I recommend Dept-Free U . This guy paid for his schooling without loans, scholarships or mooching off his parents! He said on an interview with Dave Ramsey “I just worked as much as the other kids drank beer and watched TV.”

So, if you are a young guy out there who wants a good career, without any resrouces behind you to buy either education or equipment – don’t stress! Believe it or not, this is still America and the dream is still alive – you just have to work hard for it. And the best advice I can give techy guys like me is: stop hiding your inadequacies behind your computer and software issues – and get to work – you’ll make mistakes – but learn a lot too. Do something different.

Here are some of my favorite places to get ideas and to get educated:

Video CoPilot Motion Works Gray Machine Grey Scale Gorilla Philip Bloom FXPHD Pixel Corps

Boys Adventure Guide is an educational program designed to offer fathers and their sons interactive projects to cultivate stronger familial relationships. Similar to Discovery Channel’s popular show MythBusters, Boys Adventure Guide will explain the scientific facts behind the projects shown, and the hands-on activities will provide great bonding time for the whole family!

In addition to the interactive elements of the show, Boys Adventure Guide will provide positive character development in the areas of confidence, respect, motivation, leadership, and independence. This program goes beyond the simple activity of watching television together—it offers dads the opportunity to take a proactive hand in raising their children in a culture where quality family time is more precious than ever.

Fatherhood does not come with a training manual, but Boys Adventure Guide provides an outlet where boys can be boys, and dads can observe and enjoy interacting with their sons.

The projects on the show will be fun and educational—proof that learning can be entertaining! In addition to the fun factor, the program will offer families the opportunity to work at their own pace to complete the projects without the feeling of being rushed.

Jerit Abart is honored to announce his role as Producer in the upcoming animated series, Good and Evil. The 13-part series is adapted from the award-winning graphic novel of the same name, and production is currently underway. The graphic novel, billed as the “Ultimate Superhero Comic,” is a chronological retelling of selected portions of the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation. The masterful work is illustrated by former Marvel Comics artist Danny Bulanadi, who has provided artwork for well-known comics such as The Fantastic Four, Incredible Hulk, and Micronauts. Among the awards and honors Good and Evil have received are the Independent Publishers 2009 Bronze Medal Winner in the Graphic Novel/Drama category and Finalist for the 2009 Forward Book Award. It has been translated into dozens of languages and is being distributed globally. The animated adaptation of this incredible graphic novel will be produced in the anime style that is used worldwide, from popular Japanese cartoons to major Hollywood motion pictures. The combination of images and voices will immerse the viewer in the same story that has captivated so many for two millennia. Mr. Abart is honored and proud to bring this high-quality comic book to life in an animated version that will match the original graphic novel in both quality and utility, both as spiritual tool and as an exceptional product of animated art. More information is forthcoming as production continues.

Here is the original 2007/2008 University of Memphis Tigers Intro Video, which opened every game at the FedEx Forum that season.

Working on this video was a challenge in two ways. First, it’s always tough to mix a tune that will get a crowd of 20,000 “Die Hard” Tiger fans on their feet.Second, you want a video that really fires up the Tiger players.

This video was shot during a few hours at the University of Memphis Field House in between practices. The player’s time is always scarce, especially a few weeks before the first game. To get that sweaty look, here’s a quick tip – mix equal parts water and glycerine, put the mixture in a bottle and spray it on whoever needs to look sweaty.

FedEx Forum has an amazing sound system. Having the end in mind, I mixed the music with lots of loud bass sound in mind. I wanted the audience to feel power of the music and that Tiger Roar at the end. So, I pushed the bass to the limits of what the FedEx Forum could handle (knowing the guy that controls the sounds system has it perks).

Another Production Secret: The Roar as the logo comes in (at the end), is actually an angry bear sound-effect. Sounded like a good Tiger to me – could you tell the difference?

The 2007 – 2008 Season was the last year year I produced the Intro Video. After I left to start my own company, the torch was passed on to other creative folks at Running Pony Productions.

The highlight of the season was on February 23, 2008, when the Number 1 ranked Memphis Tigers played the Number 2 ranked University of Tennessee Volunteers. The Vols won the game 66 – 62……but what a awesome ball game.

I’ve been working professionally a little over 12 years now. And this project sticks out as one of my all time favorites. I put this Graphics Package together using After Effects 3.5 and lots of coffee. I had less than 24 hours to have this job finished and out the door. Hey, I love a challenge. This was also one of the first times I used this great little plugin called “Zaxwerks 3D Invigorator Pro”. I’m always amazed what can be done with Photoshop, After Effects and a little talent.
